ARTINBLACK STUDIO
Thread portraits, handcrafted or robot-made
Send us a photograph. We turn it into string art — 50 cm, one continuous thread. Wind it yourself from the kit, or let our studio robot do it for you.
See your portrait before you buy
Sign in, upload a photograph, and watch the studio plot the thread path in real time. Nothing to pay, nothing to commit to — what you see here is what we produce.

Our Thread Portrait Gallery
Each portrait follows a single continuous thread path, computed from one photograph.
Will your photo work?
The algorithm needs contrast to work with. Here is what that means in practice.
- One face, filling most of the frame
- Directional light that leaves visible shadows
- Sharp focus on the eyes
- A plain or uncluttered background
- Group photos — each face ends up too small to read
- Flat, even light with no shadows to work from
- Heavy filters, watermarks or a heavily compressed file
- A busy background competing with the face
Not sure about yours? Upload it in the studio and look at the result before paying anything.
How a portrait is made
One photograph, one thread, one continuous path.
Thread thickness, roughly the width of a human hair. Up close you see only lines crossing; the face appears when you step back.
Thread in a single portrait, laid down as one unbroken path. The exact length depends on how dense your photograph needs to be.
From approved preview to a finished portrait leaving the studio. Shipping within Portugal is free.
The pattern is computed from the specific image you upload, so the same portrait cannot be produced twice.

- Inspected in the studio before it ships
- Ships ready to hang in a 52 × 52 × 5 cm box
What arrives in the box
The DIY kit holds everything needed for one portrait. Nothing else to buy.
Nails, already set into a 50 cm circular wooden frame and numbered. Nothing to measure, drill or align.
Bobbin of black thread at 0.06 mm, enough for one full portrait with margin for mistakes.
Printed template with the nail numbering, so you always know where you are on the frame.
Code that opens the studio for your kit: generate as many simulations as you like, pick one, and wind it with the voice assistant.
Ordering the ready portrait instead? It arrives wound, checked and ready to hang — the same 50 cm frame, nothing to assemble.
After you order
Nothing is produced until you approve what you saw on screen.
You approve that exact preview. It becomes the production file — there is no second interpretation.
A ready portrait is wound and checked in the studio, usually leaving the next working day. A kit ships straight away.
Tracking arrives by email. Shipping is free within Portugal, and we ship across Europe and to the United States; duties and local taxes may apply.
Once hanging, it asks almost nothing of you: a dry microfiber cloth now and then, away from direct sun and damp. Mount it on hardware that holds the frame securely.
